Audi is the fourth best-selling new brand in Britain and fourth in the MOT table at 83.9%. Like BMW, it builds cars that hold together well and cost a great deal to fix when they do not. The specific Audi risks are different, though — oil consumption on certain engines, the S tronic gearbox, and air suspension on the larger cars.
How long the Audi factory warranty lasts
Three years, with unlimited mileage for the first two and a 60,000-mile cap in the third. That third-year cap catches out high-mileage drivers, who are well represented among Audi buyers.
What the MOT data says about Audi
83.9% of Audis passed their MOT first time in the 2024 DVSA test year — fourth of 25 brands, close to six points above average and within a point of BMW.
The premium German brands cluster at the top of this table, and Audi is squarely among them. Again, though, the MOT is a condition test. It does not look inside a gearbox.
The Audi failures that cost real money
- Oil consumption on older 2.0 TFSI engines. Piston ring design on certain 2009–2012 engines led to high oil use. Owners report topping up between services, and running low compounds every other wear problem in the engine.
- Timing chain tensioner. Shared with the wider VW group, and the same consequence — a jumped chain on an interference engine means valve damage.
- S tronic dual-clutch gearbox. Audi's version of the DSG, with the same mechatronic failure mode and the same four-figure repair.
- Air suspension on A6, A8 and Q7 models. Compressors and air springs fail, and a corner that has dropped overnight is the classic symptom.
- DPF and EGR on TDI diesels, particularly on short-journey cars.
- Electrical modules — infotainment, comfort control and sensors.
What that costs
An S tronic mechatronic unit typically runs £1,200–£2,500 fitted. A full gearbox reaches £3,000. An air suspension compressor is commonly £600–£1,200, and a full corner more. A timing chain and tensioner job is four figures because of the labour to reach it.
As with BMW, the labour rate a policy pays matters more than on a mainstream brand. Audi specialists charge accordingly, and a low hourly cap quietly transfers most of a big bill back to you.
What a warranty does and does not cover on an Audi
Oil consumption is the one to understand. An engine that burns oil but still runs is not usually a claim — there has been no failure yet, and providers class excessive consumption on a known-affected engine as a characteristic rather than a fault. If it eventually causes a component to fail, that failure may be claimable. This is precisely why the affected 2.0 TFSI cars are worth checking carefully before you buy one, not just before you insure one.
Air suspension is worth checking in the wording too. It is covered on our policies, but it is a common exclusion elsewhere or is capped separately — and on a Q7 that difference is worth more than the entire premium.
How much does a Audi extended warranty cost?
There is no fixed price, because extended cover is priced on the car rather than the driver. Audis usually cost more to cover than mainstream brands for the same reason they cost more to fix: parts are dearer and labour times are longer. Within the range, an A1 or A3 with a manual gearbox sits at the cheaper end, while an S tronic automatic, quattro four-wheel drive, a large diesel or air suspension on the A6, A8 or Q7 pushes the price up.
The four things that move a Audi quote most are:
- Age. The older the car, the more likely a component is to fail, so age is usually the biggest factor.
- Mileage. High mileage raises the price, and the car must be within the eligibility limits (ClearPath quotes cars up to 15 years old and 150,000 miles).
- Engine, gearbox and suspension. An S tronic gearbox, quattro, a V6 or a car with air suspension has more expensive parts to protect, so it usually costs more to cover.
- Length of plan. A longer plan usually works out cheaper per year than buying one year at a time.
The sensible test is to hold a year of cover against one of the bills earlier in this guide. A single S tronic mechatronic repair or one air suspension corner can cost more than a year of cover. Whoever quotes you, a dealer or an independent provider, compare the same four numbers alongside the price: the limit per claim, the excess, the labour rate the policy pays, and whether there is a cap on total claims. When cover is worth it for an Audi owner
An A3, A4 or Q5 out of factory warranty with an S tronic gearbox is a strong case, for the same reason as a DSG Golf. So is any air-suspension car, where a single corner can cost more than a year of cover.
Read the claim limit before the price. An Audi repair reaches the ceiling of a cheap policy faster than almost anything else on the road, and a policy that stops at £1,000 a claim will not carry a gearbox.
