A hybrid runs two systems at once, so a proper hybrid warranty needs to cover both — the same engine and gearbox failures as any petrol car, plus the hybrid-specific battery, motor and control electronics a standard policy was never written for. Toyota's own hybrid battery cover is renewed for another 12 months every time the car is serviced at a Toyota dealer, up to 15 years with no mileage cap — miss a service, or use an independent garage, and that chain breaks, which is usually where independent cover picks up. The hybrid inverter or converter is often the more expensive hybrid-specific failure at £1,200–£2,800 fitted, well above what most engine and gearbox faults already cost.

How long does a hybrid battery last?
Far longer than most people expect. Because a conventional hybrid keeps its small pack part-charged rather than cycling it fully, high-mileage examples regularly pass 200,000 miles on the original battery. Heat and long periods of standing are what shorten that, not mileage on its own.
What are the first signs of a failing hybrid battery?
A noticeable drop in fuel economy, the petrol engine running more often and at odd moments, the charge gauge swinging quickly between full and empty, and the pack's cooling fan running loudly. A warning light usually comes last, not first.
Can a hybrid battery be repaired instead of replaced?
Frequently, yes. The pack is made of individual modules, and a single weak module can be replaced and the pack rebalanced for a few hundred pounds. Ask for a block-level diagnosis before accepting a quote for a whole pack.
Does Toyota still cover the hybrid battery on an older car?
It can. Toyota's hybrid battery cover is renewed for a further twelve months at each service carried out by a Toyota dealer, up to fifteen years from registration, with no mileage cap. Miss a service or have it done elsewhere and the chain breaks.
