Most new cars sold in the UK come with a three-year manufacturer warranty — but the mileage limits vary, a few brands go much further, and several now extend cover for up to ten years if you keep servicing at the dealer. Here is how every major brand compares.

Figures are the published UK terms at the time of writing and can depend on the registration date and model. Your service book or the manufacturer’s website has the exact terms for your car.
Does the warranty transfer when you buy used?
Yes. A manufacturer warranty stays with the car, not the owner, so a two-year-old Kia still has five years left when you buy it. What matters is the original registration date and the mileage — whichever limit is reached first ends the cover.
The catch with “up to 10 years”
Service-activated warranties (Toyota Relax, Honda, Citroën, Nissan and others) only continue if the car is serviced at a franchised dealer, every year, on time. Miss a service or use an independent garage and the extension usually stops at the next renewal point. That’s fine if you were going to use the dealer anyway, but dealer servicing on an older car typically costs noticeably more than an independent.
What’s covered — and what isn’t
A manufacturer warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship. It does not cover wear and tear, accident damage, or problems caused by missed servicing. Extended years are often more limited than the first three — some exclude parts like the clutch, battery or infotainment. Read the terms for your brand: what a car warranty covers explains the usual split.
When it runs out
Once the manufacturer warranty ends, every repair is yours to pay for. That’s when an extended warranty earns its place — especially on cars where the first big bills tend to arrive between years four and eight: turbos, DPFs, timing chains, gearboxes. Our Free MOT & Reliability Hub shows what typically goes wrong by make and model, and extended vs manufacturer warranty compares the two side by side.
The bottom line
Three years is the norm, Kia and MG lead on standard cover, and Toyota, Lexus, Honda and Citroën go furthest if you service at the dealer. Check the exact end date on your car, then decide before it runs out — cover is simpler to arrange while the car is still fault-free.
