People search for “breakdown repair cover” and “breakdown warranty” as if they were one product. They are two different things that solve two different problems — and the gap between them is where most of the expensive surprises happen.
The short answer
Breakdown cover (the AA, RAC, Green Flag and similar) sends someone out when your car stops. They try to fix it at the roadside and, if they can’t, tow it to a garage or home. A car warranty (also called mechanical breakdown cover) pays the garage bill to repair the part that failed — the parts and the labour.
One gets you and the car off the hard shoulder. The other pays for the gearbox.
| Breakdown cover | Car warranty | |
|---|---|---|
| What it does | Roadside help, recovery, onward travel | Pays for the repair of the failed part |
| Typical cost | From around £5–£15 a month | Depends on the car’s age, mileage and make |
| Pays for parts? | Only small parts fitted at the roadside | Yes, for covered components |
| Pays garage labour? | No (unless you buy an add-on) | Yes, for covered repairs |
| Example | Your clutch fails on the M25 — you’re towed home | The gearbox repair that follows is paid for |
What breakdown cover actually covers
A breakdown policy is about getting you moving. Depending on the level you buy, that usually means:
- Roadside assistance — a patrol fixes what can be fixed on the spot: a flat battery, a fuse, a jump start.
- Recovery — a tow to a local garage, or anywhere in the UK on higher tiers.
- Home start — help when the car won’t start on your drive.
- Onward travel — a hire car, train fare or hotel on premium levels.
What it doesn’t do is pay for the repair once the car is at the garage. If your turbo has failed, the patrol can tow you — but the £1,500 turbo bill is yours.
“Parts and garage cover” add-ons
Some breakdown providers sell an add-on that pays a fixed amount towards garage repairs after a breakdown. It can help with smaller bills, but the limit per claim is usually low compared with the cost of a major failure. It’s worth checking the claim limit before assuming it replaces a warranty. A failed head gasket, automatic gearbox or DPF can easily run past it — see our Repair Costs Hub for real figures.
What a car warranty covers
A warranty picks up the repair itself. A comprehensive policy will typically pay for the parts and labour to fix sudden mechanical and electrical failures on the engine, gearbox, turbo, fuel system, cooling system, steering, suspension, brakes (not pads and discs) and electrics. It doesn’t send a recovery truck — that’s the breakdown policy’s job.
You can read exactly what is and isn’t included on our What’s Covered page.
What neither of them covers
- Accident damage — that’s your car insurance. (See car warranty vs insurance.)
- Routine servicing and wear items like tyres, wipers, brake pads and discs. (See what counts as wear and tear.)
- Faults that existed before the cover started.
Do you need both?
For most drivers of a car outside its manufacturer warranty, yes — they work as a pair. Breakdown cover is cheap and deals with the inconvenience. A warranty deals with the bill, which is where the real financial risk sits on an older or higher-mileage car. Many new cars also come with a few years of free manufacturer roadside assistance, so check your handbook before buying breakdown cover twice.
The bottom line
Breakdown cover fixes the situation; a warranty fixes the car. If you only have one, you’re covered for the tow but not the repair, or for the repair but not the tow. Knowing which is which means no nasty surprise at the garage counter.
Frequently asked questions
Is breakdown cover the same as a car warranty?
No. Breakdown cover provides roadside help and recovery when your car stops. A car warranty pays for the repair of the part that failed, including parts and labour.
Does AA or RAC breakdown cover pay for repairs?
Standard breakdown cover pays for roadside fixes and recovery, not garage repairs. Some providers sell a parts and garage add-on, usually with a limited amount per claim.
Do I need breakdown cover if I have a car warranty?
They do different jobs. A warranty pays the repair bill; breakdown cover gets you and the car to safety and to a garage. Most drivers of older cars benefit from both.
